Another really fun hook here as Ava and Sara watch a horror movie in bed. One that Sara’s never seen before. And she’s seen all of them…The investigation leads to a summer camp in the 1990s, some incredibly bad polo shirts and a surprise moment of bonding for Sara and Ava.

The premise here is the sort of thing Supernatural and The Librarians in particular have done before but it’s executed with real flair and enthusiasm and has some surprising turns along the way. Like all great Legends episodes it has a rock solid emotional core and Ava struggling to fit in despite never actually being a kid is surprisingly poignant and very well handled. Likewise discovering Sara was a happy outdoors-y camp kid is a neat contrast to the nocturnal kickboxing avenger she first reappeared as.

Best of all though is the Ray and John plot this week. The show’s circling something major with Constantine, and Matt Ryan is on top form here. Not only do we get some nice moments of comedy but there’s a really touching scene where he basically pushes Ray away. Constantine is terrified of people around him dying and likes the big lug too much for it to be him. Ray, because he is a golden retriever in human form, of course shrugs this off. Constantine, because he is a grimy partial feral Jack Russell whose bark is worse than his bite, then proceeds to sacrifice a portion of his life to save one of the children. That leads into next episode and also, crucially, shows that camp has had an effect on him too. Ava wanted a childhood, John wants to save people instead of damn them. I have no doubt he’ll still be a punk curmudgeon at the end of the season but they’re doing a great job of softening his heart if not his outlook.

Verdict: Very funny and surprisingly deep, this is another winning entry in a strong season. 8/10
