The Jane Austen plot this week is an absolute joy. Not least because Zari, still not wanting to look her attraction to Nate in the eyes, is literally bowled over by Sanjay. Sanjay is gorgeous, articulate, kind and a fugitive holding the ashes of Kamadeva, a Hindu God of love. This leads to a glorious sequence where, captured on the ship, Sanjay releases the ashes into the vents and everyone has a much more fun night than they were expecting. This leads to Charlie having a magnificently filthy dream involving David Bowie. It also gives us a brilliant sight gag as Zari, to camera, realizes the topless Nate and Sanjay in her quarters means she’s dreaming. Best of all, it leads to Mona dreaming of Konane. Her reaction to that gives a welcome edge to her and the episode and leads to a confrontation with Austen which is deeply satisfying for fans and people who had to read her books at school alike.
Oh and then there’s the full scale Bollywood number.
Seriously. And it’s great.
The present day plot is less fun because what could possibly top Austen Bollywood but it’s still very good. The reveal in particular is great and Hank as a whimsical, well meaning dreamer is a very different take on the character that works really well and takes the edge off his betrayal. All of which comes together for an episode which sets up the final act of the season but is still crammed full of fun to be had.
Verdict: Great stuff, as usual with this show. 9/10
