Rock and roll is dead! No, wait, Rock and roll is death! No, wait, rock and roll is death totem!

So here’s the stuff that works here. Nate as a rock and roll fanboy is adorable. Wally making his mark on the team and with Zari is especially well handled. It’s been a while since the roster was shaken up and Wally is a lovely, sweet-natured addition.

Then there’s the plot with Elvis himsel…vis. Connecting him to the death totem, and through that to the supernatural fear surrounding rock and roll is really smart. Likewise the clash between Elvis and the pastor is surprisingly well handled. The show also takes great pains to have apparently antagonistic characters make good choices and this week is no exception. There are no villains here, just good people in bad situations doing what they think is right and, sometimes, succeeding.

All that is great. The tone deaf approach to race is not. The inescapable truth is that Zari, Amaya and Wally in particular would not be welcome in this community at all and for the show to avoid that altogether feels cheap. I accept it was almost certainly not possible to do without the episode being centred on the issue. Nonetheless, an acknowledgement of it would have been welcome.

Verdict: That aside, this is a fun, weird episode of a fun, weird show. Worth it for Wally’s scenes in particular. 7/10
