Albert Guillotin returns to life as his brother discovers a horrifying secret.
In case there was ever any doubt, this French period piece turns up the horror level considerably for its second episode, with murder and resurrection and a dissected rat coming back to life – all connected to the blue liquid that’s been injected into the veins either before or immediately after the subject’s death. There’s plenty of politics tied into this, but the bottom line is that it seems at least one of the aristocracy has maintained his position thanks to this little formula – and he’s not going to let anyone (not even the father of one of its victims) get in the way.
There’s also an eerie connection between Albert Guillotin – who we know was shot dead, but has somehow returned to France – and the mute young girl… as well as definite voodoo links with dolls (don’t ever break the spell of this and check into what they’re actually used for – it removes such a potent piece of horror iconography!)
Verdict: Still maintaining a steady pace, the dividing lines are becoming clearer – with the audience sympathies clearly for the downtrodden. 7/10
