That’s not how you save the world.
Nor is it how you save this story. I would like to tell you that there are scenes in this episode without plot holes. I would like to tell you that there are scenes that will not make you want to either scratch your head, laugh when you shouldn’t, or scream. I would love to tell you that it’s tonally consistent.
I can tell you none of those things.
We meet another new but long-discussed character, but the actions he takes are ridiculous in terms of his connection to the main players. No, a throwaway sentence towards the end of the episode to try to paper over this particular crack is not going to cut it. He just comes across as a badly-sketched Bond villain, and none of his allegedly world-saving ideas hold up under even the lightest scrutiny, even if you’re trying your hardest to suspend belief.
There’s something inconsistent or grating with every single scene. From Eve’s jacket reappearing (wouldn’t they have had to leave their other clothes behind in the caves?) to an injured man being badgered by all and sundry while he lies (probably) dying, I was dying too… for there to be one problem-free sequence… but I was disappointed. By the time that angry ‘guy with glasses and long hair’ from episode 3 turns up again, I’m at a ‘person flips table’ level of annoyance. I don’t care what his flipping name is, but thanks again, Captain Exposition. Add to all that an entirely incongruent tonal shift wedged in with a chisel and that kills the episode stone dead. There’s a way to use music from a by-gone decade to evoke a nostalgic response in your audience, and this is not it.
It’s getting one point for another lovely reunion moment right at the end, however contrived, because I’m feeling generous.
Verdict: There’s no bringing this episode back from the dead. 1/10
