While the rest of the group get to spend a day at the genetics lab, Kenji and Darius are tasked with a bit of manual labour as punishment. But that won’t stop anyone getting into a bit of trouble…

OK so nobody really thought that one or more of the gang was going to get eaten by Blue the raptor and her packmates, but still it was a nice cliffhanger end to the episode and this one picks up exactly where we left off, with a combination of Darius’ bravery and a timely intervention meaning that the pair are safe, from the raptors at least.

Ticked off thoroughly by Roxie, the pair manage to escape any serious punishment when they somewhat alter the story of the night’s events, leaving Kenji somewhat in Darius’s debt. That’s not to say that they get away with it totally though. The next day when everyone else gets to go to the lab to see some baby dinos, Darius and Kenji get to do something altogether less appealing. But leaving this pair alone is not the wisest move, and Kenji soon finds a way to drag them both into another bit of adventure.

At the lab, things don’t go altogether smoothly either. A premature birth surprises and somewhat displeases Doctor Wu (yes, that one) although it does rather attach itself to a rather surprising member of the group. Wu’s irritation at the imperfect dinosaur however is not nearly so great as it is with a member of the group who elects to stray somewhat out of bounds.

What’s nice here is that while some of the action may seem a little obvious, the character work is pleasantly surprising. Kenji turns out not to be quite the annoying blowhard he might at first have appeared. Brooklynn shows a vulnerability (and a naivety) which wasn’t immediately apparent and Billy gets to be far more than just ‘the sickly kid who barfs a lot’ in this one.

There’s also stuff here that more firmly asserts the show within the timeline of the wider franchise, meaning that yes, I expect as the show goes on, events will intersect with those already seen in Jurassic World.

Verdict: All in all, it’s pacey, fun and does more with its characters than you might expect. Top stuff. 9/10
