A medical examiner is called in to perform an autopsy on a several miners killed in a mysterious explosion, one of whom might not be entirely human.

The third item in Guillermo del Toro’s curious cabinet is something of an alien curate’s egg. Well actually, it’s a tape-recorder, containing what I suppose we ought to call ‘found audio footage’. We’re in familiar alien autopsy territory but it has a great denouement, and a couple of excellent set pieces along the way.

Where this episode stumbles, is that in order to get to its impressively gory climax, it has to wade through a bit too much talky exposition. It’s worth it though, and when you’ve got an actor of the calibre of F. Murray Abraham driving much of the action single handed, it’s always going to be eminently watchable and engaging.

Verdict: The Autopsy clunks in places, but is enjoyably disgusting and well worth sticking with, and, like the rest of this series, framed within sumptuously grimy production design. 6/10
