Gwen’s fantasy is to go back in time and be the princess she longs to be…
The Princess Bride, Fantasy Island edition.
Seriously it is, though. The stereotypical male hero even says “as you wish” at one point.
This is a sweet, romantic tale that has the delicate nuance of a brick. Our ‘Gwen’, stretching the ‘wounded student who gives up on her entire dream after one bad day’ theme to the limit, wishes to be a princess… but she didn’t check the small-print as she’s plunged into a Robin Hood style fantasy – or should that be Camelot? Her beau is called ‘Lance’, after all. Her ‘Arthur’ isn’t nice though. Cue predictable heroics.
Elena takes a much more direct approach with her main guest this week, a growing habit that’s been on slow burn this season, and I have to say that I like this authoritative side of Elena, it lends an extra dynamic to her character.
It’s a cutesy and not entirely surprising twist when it turns out that ‘Lance’ was also an island guest in his own fantasy, one compatible with that of our titular heroine.
A stereotypical happy ending, but to balance it, there’s another hidden layer peeled away from the magic of the island and its environs and it’s grabbed me. The strange tattoo twinges Ruby has been getting start to make more sense, and there’s a reminder that Elena is the boss. I’m here for it and most of the points are for the one scene that reveals some important backstory.
Verdict: Mysteries and some deep-rooted island beef rescue us from Camelot… no swords wedged into stone needed. 7/10
