A hurricane arrives on Fantasy Island in more ways than one.
Mamma Mia, the Fantasy Island edition? This week, the arrival of a young woman searching for the father she never knew after the death of her beloved mother coincides with the pre-nuptial trip of a slightly older group of men. Men who could, technically, be old enough to be her father. Coincidence? There’s no such thing!
To a certain extent, when you’re watching a series with such a fantastical premise that the word ‘fantasy’ is actually in the title, you have to go into it ‘suspending your disbelief’ to a certain extent. That being said, if there’s a lack of coherence in the narrative, it can be off-putting. There’s a fine line between failing to follow the rules of the world you’ve built and expending its universe to enrich the story. Arguably the previous episode and this one have both tried to do the latter, but this episode succeeds. It just feels more like it’s getting into its stride a little better.
Just when you think there’s a chance that Elena and Javi’s blossoming and loved-up relationship might make things a little dull, there’s a change that I genuinely wasn’t expecting… before it becomes obvious, shortly before the reveal. That, for me, has freshened it up a little and I’m interested to see where it goes.
Verdict: We shift up half a gear in this second episode, and there’s a welcome addition. 8/10
