The Other Woman, the Fantasy Island edition.
You know, when the guest fantasy is a bad thing, that it’s not going to work out the way they think it is. A voodoo-doll to use in cahoots with your fellow ex-wives to inflict pain on your ex-husband? Of course that’s going to end well. I’m not even mad that the outcome is more cheese-filled and sugar coated than usual, because that’s not where anyone’s attention is going to be focused. It’s show-down time for Elena, Ruby and Isla.
Going right back to the first episode of the first series, despite the fact that Ruby got a second lease of life, I felt a little sorry for the children that we never met. Well, we meet her daughter MJ this week and it’s just about the best card that Elena could have played. Gloss over the rather hard to swallow fantastical premise of Ruby’s existence on the island, and it’s apparent how heart breaking it is for MJ to see her mother like this. Segundo and Javi are there with some wise words, and for the first time, we see Isla on the back foot. What’s more powerful magic than clicking your heels together three times and wishing for home? Love.
With a much more compelling and satisfying story arc for the island’s main residents, it’s lovely to see them all having a quiet and happy moment in the closing scene – I can’t help but think how very on-brand it is, and that it’s a good note to bring the curtain down on our sun-kissed fantasy island.
Verdict: A happy ending in paradise – well, what else would it be? 8/10
