This time it’s One Fine Day, the Fantasy Island edition.
A much younger Miss Havisham arrives at Fantasy Island’s dock in the immediate aftermath of her abandoned wedding, but this isn’t really a tale of a broken engagement. It’s about acrimonious divorce and the scars it can leave on children. A complex and emotionally charged topic, but the island conjures her childhood imaginary friend to add a light-hearted and nostalgic layer to her journey of self-discovery.
It’s quite cleverly done, expressing her trauma through the eyes of the girl she used to be, to add context to her adult behaviour and reveal its harmful nature. As we have less than an hour to wrap this up, of course the parents get the point and they all hug it out… with a reconciliation between the betrothed to add the sugared icing to the cake. If only such epiphanies didn’t take years of expensive therapy in real life, eh?
The drama this episode comes from Isla’s reveal to Ruby of Elena’s warning and it’s as awful (in a good way) as expected. Elena has done what she feels best, but of course the breach of trust cuts deep and we see the resulting emotional bloodshed in all its gory detail. Nicely done, Fantasy Island. More of this intrigue please!
Verdict: A much stronger instalment… but will Ruby regret choosing heart over mind? 9/10
