The pitfalls of youthful wanderlust.
There is another relatable cold open for episode 4: a rebellious daughter longing to fly the nest because her mother just doesn’t understand her. Once again, whatever deity may be pulling the strings on Fantasy Island, they have a creative way of helping said restless teen appreciate what she has.
Cue a trip to late 60s Havana, enabling some Quantum Leap style period drama as family members are encountered and a secret revealed. A secret that you could possibly guess, but I’m only docking 1 point for the fact that none of the ‘reveals’ have been the least surprising so far in Fantasy Island.
What this episode does manage to do is invoke beautiful nostalgia. Even if you don’t have Cuban blood and funky Latin beats in your veins, the chance to explore your heritage in live form – especially if your ancestral roots sprouted in other pastures from those you grew in – will strike a chord. The familial bond we have a window into will touch you, whether you can either relate to the feeling of family being everything or you wish you had a family who loved each other as deeply.
Elsewhere, we learn that Elena has a past in Havana too, and a mystery man – curiouser and curiouser. Ruby is encouraged to spread her wings a little and a plot point that hasn’t been visited since the first episode comes back into play, much to my delight.
Verdict: Prepare to have your heart strings plucked. 8/10
