Who watches the watchers – who exorcises the exorcist?

A number of plotlines vie for attention this week, with one heavily based around one of Kristen’s daughters. The main one involves the priest who’s been exorcising Leland, who has secrets of his own, while the latter sees Skylar and her next door neighbour friend convinced that her friend’s dad has been turned into a zombie. That leads down its own particular path – and a lesson in Haitian zombies, which, it has to be said, only tells part of the story. Unusually for this show, it’s the more mundane explanation that’s given preference. The girls are convinced they’ve seen zombies but things don’t work out quite as they plan. I think I was hoping more for this storyline to go the way of the Leslie Charteris tale Sibao, with the tables turned on the oppressors but this is a welcome change of pace.

With regard to Father Joe, the exorcist, there’s a lot going on which a second viewing helps clarify, in terms of who he’s in thrall to, and exactly what’s happening. The stage is set for one of the best moments with Leland, courtesy of Sister Andrea – it knocks the audience in much the same way as it does the characters, and the payoff later may provoke a wry smile.

Verdict: Plenty of questions, and a few answers in the latest strong instalment. 8/10
