The team ramp up their investigation of RSM Fertility; Ben, Sheryl and Lexis all face difficulties…

I thought last week’s episode was moving things around in preparation for the endgame of this season, and it looks as if that was a correct assessment. Lots of plotlines move forward this time out, and there’s a definite feel that everything is coming to a head.

Investigations at the fertility clinic lead to Leland, as the doctor who used to work there is revealed as having been paying for the storage of Kristen’s eggs – although there’s another wrinkle regarding those thrown up in the last few minutes. Kristen finally realises that there’s something up with Lexis – but we’re more than a few steps ahead of her, as we know what makes Lexis unique. (Or is she? If another child has the canine issue, maybe they’re similarly blessed with an extra appendage?) This does mean some mother and daughter time, and it’s good to see the more down to earth side of Kristen.

Aasif Mandvi once again gets a plotline which tests his character’s beliefs, from an “exorcism” to a shocking realisation when he gets a phone call while at his girlfriend’s apartment. It feels like we’re wandering into Stephen King territory here (anybody checked the swallows locally?).

Mike Colter’s David is following up the RSM leads, and meets up with Sheryl and her new friend Edward toward the end of the episode – but this is a very different Sheryl from the one we’re used to. And Leland is the reason why: there may be a mutual hatred between them, but Sheryl still falls in with his plans, almost despite herself – and I must admit wondering if this time Leland has won.

Verdict: A strong episode on all fronts. 9/10
