The team are under pressure when the diocese is sued; Leland continues his instruction of Sebastian…
There are various different strands moving along in parallel in this episode, with Kristen dealing with the surprise of her husband’s return – and his not totally supportive attitude towards her new job, particularly given the pressures that come with it. The presence of a cat that quite definitely dislikes Kristen doesn’t help – is it a Satanically possessed puss? Time will no doubt tell!
David’s past is revealed both to the audience and the others in the team in a way that he’d much rather it wasn’t: we know that he wasn’t the proverbial “altar boy” prior to hearing his vocation, but there are things that put him in a new light. That’s in amongst a fascinating exploration of the dynamic between the team, and some cracking dialogue from Louisa Hill, aided by snappy direction from Frederick E.O. Toye as the realities of the church and the legal profession collide.
And all the while, unknown to Kristen, Ben and David, Leland is preparing a fresh disciple (with a little bit of the show’s own mythology being added to along the way). Sebastian doesn’t outstay his welcome on the show, and the end of his arc is handled well – as is Leland’s reaction.
Verdict: Some strong character moments and more than a few surprises. 8/10
