The team are sent to investigate a potential miracle at an order dedicated to remaining silent…

Of all the episodes of Evil so far this season, this one demonstrates quite how far the show has come from its earliest instalments. There’s a lot more humour – notably playing into how funny Katja Herbers can be – counterpointed with some real scares (once again Aasif Mandvi’s Ben being on the receiving end) while David’s call to the priesthood receives further challenges and affirmation. There’s no real outside scenes – no place for Michael Emerson or Christine Lahti in this deliberately close-knit and claustrophobic piece.

The dialogue, such as it is, is rendered via Etch-a-Sketch toys (David getting a Star Trek: The Animated Series one!) with only a handful of scenes featuring the team getting a chance to talk. They’re aware that they can’t speak otherwise a demon might be released – and you can guess which of the team is the one to break the spell… and gets a very Harryhausen-esque visitation as a result. Each of the team has their own demons issues to deal with, and I suspect we’ve seen some clear indications in this episode as to how things are going to go  for at least one of them…

Verdict: A different and effective episode. 8/10
