The SyFy comedy drama loosely based on George A Romero’s Day of the Dead movie continues to hold your attention in the same way that rubberneckers slow down at an accident. You know that you shouldn’t be looking at the carnage, and human nature compels you to take a peek.
Holed up in the morgue’s storage room, the funeral party are confronted with the prospect of letting the zombies in via one door, or out of their locked slabs. A severed arm doesn’t help matters when it jumps up (yes, really) and unlocks the catch. A wise move to lure the zombies away is to tow some human innards behind the hearse, and true to form the walking dead are soon staggering towards the offal bait.
Arguably of greater interest are the soapy shenanigans of the residents of the town of Mawinhaken, from wedding day strife to dirty secrets in the mayoral campaign. It’s painted broadly, but it adds a dimension (albeit shallow) to the characters.
Verdict: The zombie comedy settles down, with just the right mix of gore and soap opera – and it passes the time easily. 7/10
