Lampini loves movies more than anything and can’t wait to show off his prop collection, but when a rival collector arrives things get nasty. A drunken visit to a psychic leads to being followed by a dark force.
The opening segment of this second episode is such a crowd-pleaser that it’s a surprise it wasn’t chosen to open the season. It’s a horror fan’s dream, featuring so many references to horror movies, and in a real meta move it even mentions George A Romero and the original Creepshow movie.
Lampini (Victor Rivera, Zombieland) and Danielle (Valerie LeBlanc) are preparing to open their grand exhibit at the Skeletons in his Closet horror museum, which already features the flying orb from Phantasm and Dennis Hopper’s chainsaw from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. In steps Bateman (James Remar, Dexter), Lampini’s father’s nemesis, who blackmails the young couple. But as this is Creepshow, the bad get their comeuppance in a gruesome manner. Greg Nicotero is clearly having a ball directing this cine-literate mayhem, and the ending… just you wait.
Unfortunately, there’s not an awful lot to the second segment, which follows a young couple who visit a psychic when drunk and release a ‘familiar’, a demon-like beast which stands in the shadows. And there’s not much more to it then that, as paranoia sets in and decisive action is taken, with a predictable conclusion.
Verdict: A game of two halves, the first being a treat, the latter sadly forgettable. 7/10
