Determined to find out more about the girls being trafficked in New Orleans, Tandy undertakes a dangerous journey looking for answers. Meanwhile, Ty’s actions continue to cause problems for him, this time endangering those he loves as well.
Last week ended pretty weirdly, even for this show, with Mayhem suffering the same fate as Connors, being sucked into Ty by whatever the power is that drives him. Of course, he hadn’t mentioned what had really happened to Connors to anyone, Tandy included, so that means now he’s set for an awkward conversation.
Not just for that reason though – Tandy, much as she doesn’t like Mayhem’s methods, wants to know what O’Reilly’s angry twin knows so that she can go on and rescues the girls who are still in the clutches of the traffickers. Their plight has hit her on a personal level, and not just because of her connection to one of them. Tandy has had a bad life and lived through some poor decisions (though just barely) and she’s driven by a sense of wanting justice for girls she recognises as fellow victims. But is Mayhem now gone forever, and what does it mean if she is?
While Tandy sets off on a quest for answers to all those questions and more, Ty is left to deal with the consequences of his own actions as his face gets recognised and some of the many people he’s managed to piss off are put on not just his trail, but onto that of his family as well. Forced to go on the run with assistance from O’Reilly and a particular drawback that makes his life that bit harder, Ty is forced to think on his feet in a way that he hasn’t had to before.
Splitting the two protagonists for the majority of its runtime, this is an episode that deals with contrasts on many levels. Tandy’s side of it gets very deep, metaphysical and philosophical, as the weirdness dial gets turned up a few notches even on last week. Ty’s side of proceedings, by contrast, couldn’t be more mundane in terms of dealing with the very real world and the absolutely real things that happen within it. There’s also the emphasis on the contrast between our two heroes’ lives growing up, the difference between how their powers work and how they view their responsibilities in using them, but as a through line to all of it, the foundational fact of just how much they each need the other, and how inextricably they and their destinies are linked.
Where things might go from here isn’t exactly clear, especially given the way things end as the credits roll. What seems certain, is that life isn’t going to get boring for Ty or Tandy anytime soon.
Verdict: It shouldn’t be a surprise that this show would produce an episode dealing so starkly in contrasts between its two leads. What is a surprise is how deftly it’s done, and how unafraid the show is to get weird with it. 8/10
