Tandy and Ty must confront Deschaine in the Loa Dimension to try to bring an end to him before he becomes all-powerful in his new firm. But in order to succeed, each must overcome their own personal demons first.

It’s an odd thing that a show that’s been as consistently good as Cloak & Dagger this week seems to fumble the ending somewhat, but that’s where we are. Don’t get me wrong, everything I usually love about the show is still here – they commit fully to the voodoo side of things here, with our heroes seeking help from Evita to cross over to the Loa dimension in order to confront Deschaine. It’s just that a lot of what happens feels like a mixture of rushed and repetitive.

On the repetition point, it makes a sort of sense to have each of the heroes struggle to overpower their enemy while still held back by their own demons. What’s odd is the form those demons take – in each case it feels like stuff the character has already dealt with before. There’s a particularly awkward sequence involving a sort of switcheroo situation which essentially entails each extolling the virtues of the other out loud. Then the situation snaps back to the conventional facing of things which it feels like have already been faced.

Once that’s dealt with, the actual confrontation with Deschaine, which has been building for over half this season now, just sort of ends. There’s no real catharsis to it. No sense of having really done much of anything. It’s almost a “blink and you’ll miss it” sequence.

Back in the real world, poor Evita can’t even get one decent scene to herself, as Brigid/Mayhem/whatever the hell we are calling this character now turns up to defend her from… something seeking to stop the heroes. It’s kind of odd that these supernatural creatures of the Loa realm take the form of fairly banal dudes in black jumpsuits and riot helmets. Weirder still that their apparent concerted effort at stopping our heroes consists of walking one at a time at the vicious and competent woman who’s kicking their backsides.

And then it all just… ends. There’s a whole series of stuff that feels like I gets wrapped up way too easily and neatly and then an ending which leaves the possibility of a third season as much as it leaves the possibility of that being an end to it. It feels like we have had so much careful and patient build-up and then it just gets wasted by rushing the finale. I never thought I’d end up saying this about this show, but I was disappointed.

Verdict: Oddly rushed and unsatisfying considering the pacing and build-up to this point. A disappointing end to a great series. 6/10
