A mid-season backstory episode to explain why and how Chucky got himself into The White House in the first place.

Remember I said how much I was enjoying the new season of Chucky because Don Mancini was keeping a lid on things and taking a more measured approach? Well, forget all that. Jennifer Tilly is back. It’s not full on Tilly bonkers quite yet, but it’s certainly a heads-up that we’re going to need to strap in.

The episode winds back six months, and following the mayhem at the end of Season 2, Chucky escapes, adopting Lexy’s kid sister Caroline (Carina Battrick) as his new human apprentice. But he’s got a problem – he’s suffering from the side effects of the Catholic exorcism he endured at the School of the Incarnate Lord. He’s not well, and has to consult a doctor.

Which doctor, you might ask? Well, that’s a question that answers itself.

See what I did there?

Anyway, if Chucky is to cure his ailment he needs to plumb new depths of evil on a grander scale than ever before. Luckily Caroline, is a dab hand with computers and works out how her psycho doll can ingratiate himself into the First Family.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Tilly is on trial for multiple homicides, and comes up with a rock solid defence, by telling the God’s honest truth on the witness stand. However, ‘truth’ in Chucky land has its legal drawbacks.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ is a smart, laugh-out-loud, gag laden forty minutes of unadulterated comedy horror. It’s maybe a just a tad too meta for my tastes – I like Chucky best when it completely believes in itself – but the script is as sharp as one of Chucky’s knives, and the jokes – visual and verbal – are smart enough to carry it off. I’m not going to quote them: they’re best delivered fresh.

Verdict: Season 3 of Chucky continues to delight. I’m just hoping that Mancini can keep control of the monster, although I’ll probably enjoy it anyway, whatever he does. Friend to the End, and all that. 9/10
