It isn’t always Chucky causing the mayhem.
In this mid-season ‘special’, the series takes a break from Jake, Devon and Lexy’s central through-line, and goes completely meta-lala in a grotesque Agatha Christie parody, as the episode title, Death on Denial, suggests. This episode is so meta, imagine the most meta thing you can and then double it.
Yeah. It’s a bit more meta than that.
I’m not sure it’s worth attempting to describe the plot set-up, except to say it involves Jennifer Tilly at her most Jennifer Tilly; an off-the-scale murder mystery house party; Meg Tilly, Gina Gershon and Joe Pantoliano as themselves (sort of); Glen and Glenda, Jennifer’s gender fluid twins (complete with Ed Wood angora sweaters); a Chucky chat show; and of course Fiona Dourif as the quadruple amputee, Nica Pierce.
I’m not sure it makes a whole lot of sense, but it is strangely watchable, and as long as the series doesn’t dwell too long in this territory it is an enjoyable diversion, and does have a few relevant plot points buried somewhere in all the lunacy.
Verdict: I’m not saying the latest episode of Chucky is over the top, but you might want to make sure you haven’t been overdosing on your meds, and you might also want to lie down in a darkened room for an hour after watching. 7/10
