Maggie and Harry track down a lead relating to the Tallyman. Kaela gets an unexpected visitor. Mel and Jordan try to get to the bottom of Ray’s mystery illness.
So, there’s a lot going on here. The Tallyman is dead but his nefarious scheme seems to live on and grow. This time out, the gang find their attentions split as life keeps happening.
Mel and Maggie decide it’s time to confront Harry about exactly what he’s been sneaking around doing for the last few months, and that conversation goes about as well as you might expect. Unfortunately, Things are Afoot, so having had the first part of the chat, they have to crack on.
For Maggie and Harry, that means tracing an address related to the Tallyman to see if they can turn up any clues about what his ultimate plan might have been. When they arrive, there’s not much to go on, save for a long-dead body. Good job Harry’s a Necrolighter now, eh? Of course the corpse turns out to be the Tallyman’s deceased brother, and Harry’s conversations with him in the Veil prove less than fruitful – no he doesn’t know what his disappointment of a little brother’s plans were but he is quite interested in maybe piggybacking Harry’s essence back to the land of the living, and he’s not the only one stuck in that particular plane of existence who feels that way…
Back at home, Kaela and Dev are having some alone time when out of nowhere Kaela’s foster mom turns up in person for a surprise visit. How can Kaela explain away her new beau (who, for the record, she’s just finished telling is not her boyfriend but more of a friend with benefits) and keep the truth about her witchy powers from her Ghanaian god-fearing mother? Well, turns out that Dev can’t only charm his way into Kaela’s pants, but as well as things are going, Kaela suspects that something isn’t quite as it seems.
As for Mel, having (fairly easily) prised the truth from Jordan about Ray’s current status, she goes with him to Ray’s storage unit to search for an artefact which may be able to help them. Small problem, they have no idea where to start looking and a ticking clock, on top of which there’s the small matter of All Of The Other Things going on
If anything, it all feels a little… rushed. The Tallyman arc felt like it might be going somewhere but then abruptly ended. Now, with the follow on arc of people believing bad things of the Charmed Ones, questions over Kaela’s parentage, Maggie and Jordan, Harry and his quest to find Macy in the Veil and now Ray thrown into the mix, it all feels a bit coconut shy in its approach, and I’m starting to wonder if the recent announcement of the cancellation of the show was something the writers had half-expected, given how much they seem to be trying to cram in.
Verdict: A lot crammed into the same episode length. Doesn’t quite hold the attention. 6/10
