As Ian’s true identity is revealed, the terrifying prospect of an evil greater than Pretzel Jack is a horrific prospect for Jill.
For all its crazy twists and turns you could never accuse Channel Zero of being boring, and following the big reveal at the end of episode 4, the stage is set for the final act. Practising their powers like wannabe X-Men, Jill and Ian’s relationship looks like it’s getting somewhere… except she’s his sister, and then Tom accuses him of killing their father. Ian has been creepy from the word go, but none of us realised quite how big a part he would play – I initially had him tagged as cannon fodder.
Ian’s confession of the murders is most chilling and the eternally dim detectives really get what’s coming to them when they don’t see any issue in sticking a self-confessed serial killer in the back of a regular squad car; Pretzel Jack Mark II assaults them with a brace of nail guns – bloody carnage follows. But what must be the series’ most bizarre moment to date (and that’s saying something!) is the procreation of a limbless Eraserhead-style baby following some ‘make up’ sex between the leads. It truly is the stuff of nightmares.
Verdict: Channel Zero continues to throw logic to the wind in another bizarre episode that shocks and mystifies in equal parts. Logic be damned, this is a non-stop ghost train of a ride that refuses to just be spooky when it can outrage and revel in its madness. Garage full of sweater-wearing pugs, chowing down on an eyeless corpse? Check! 8/10
