When newlyweds Jillian and Tom move into the latter’s childhood home they discover a mysterious door in the basement that wasn’t there before.
Are you ready for another serving of the popular horror anthology series that’s based on a ‘creepypasta’ short story? After season 3’s intense (and quite bonkers) Butcher’s Block, season 4 is a lot more straightforward, starring Brandon Scott (Grey’s Anatomy and Maria Sten (Straight Outta Compton). The set-up is very familiar (couple move into haunted house) but even before the supernatural things start happening there’s clearly distrust in the relationship.
Jill is carrying a lot of baggage courtesy of her father’s past behaviour – we’re reminded of this on multiple occasions – and there’s a moment where your eyes roll in a ‘uh-oh’ manner when reference is made to a creepy character she invented in her youth: Pretzel Jack the contortionist. We’ll be seeing him later.
When the eponymous door makes its appearance it’s a fairly formidable structure. You can’t crowbar it open, a handgun to the lock makes no difference, but when there’s only Jill in the house, it’s ready to swing open… and guess who is on the other side? The ending is a shocking, frenzied attack, reminding us just how visceral this show can be.
Verdict: Extreme, shocking and very good at getting under your skin, Channel Zero is back with a bang, and a welcome addition to the Halloween programming on the TV. 8/10
