Finally we get to find out who the mysterious Kid is, but you probably aren’t ready for the explanation, and what its consequences are.
Castle Rock is a series that revels in its ability to shock and delight and this penultimate episode delivers a massive rug pull. Think you know what’s going on, and just who Henry Deaver is? Think again. This is the third instalment in a row where the show refuses to follow a standard narrative structure, instead focusing on a key character as they travel through time.
Bill Skarsgård finally gets the chance to do something more than look bewildered as the Kid, and I really wonder how many people had picked up all the breadcrumbs and clues along the way to guess his character’s provenance. It’s certainly all falling in to place, which is right for a show that only has an hour left, but the bigger question now is around who should be victorious by the end or whether there’s a way to go back and fix things.
Verdict: Not an easy watch and you may just have to pause and rewind some of the key reveals. Nowhere near as frustrating as Westworld’s Season 2 (which managed to go both down the rabbit hole and up its own proverbial at the same time), this complex show demands your full attention, and could never be accused of being predictable or formulaic. 8/10
