The Freeland PD execute ‘Cape Guy’, a PTSD suffering veteran who gained Green Light powers. Jefferson struggles to instil a code in the next generation of Pierce family heroes. And Tobias wakes his army up.
Again the show works on multiple fronts. Jefferson having no problem with his partner and kids being part of the business is a big part of the show’s unique identity. These last two episodes especially have moments of real tenderness to them which are made all the more real by the fact they’re acknowledged. This is a family with a refreshingly low level off angst and a lot of common ground, love and trust. They’re fun to watch. You want them to be okay. Which makes the Anissa plot basically getting parked for a season a little frustrating but that’s a small complaint.
Slightly more worrying is the fact the bad guys fare less well this week. While it’s nice too see the Masters of Disaster finally activated, they don’t do much besides torch a councilman and cause some havoc before Black Lightning and Thunder fight him off. At the top of the season, Tobias looked like he was pulling all the strings. Now his cards are on the table, he seems weirdly diminished. That may change next week for the big finale. Honestly, even if it doesn’t the show is in good shape.
Verdict: From the top flight cast to the moments of sweetness and action, this is a confident, strong series that has made bold choices that have paid off every time. Let’s see how that plays into the finale. 8/10
