Tobias finds an army, Jefferson gets an opportunity, Jen hits the streets and Anissa begins to discover the truth about Grace.
Another strong episode sees everyone get lots to do. Lynn’s connection to the pod metas and the conspiracy plot works really well, and it’s nice to see her folded into the main plot. Elsewhere, Jefferson’s school career gets a welcome return to the spotlight and the show’s exploration of the issues in the school is surprisingly nuanced and compassionate. Jefferson is absolutely in the right. Jefferson is absolutely the wrong person for his job and the bravest thing he’s done this season is recommend Lowry for the job.
But it’s the Pierce kids who have the most fun this week. Anissa’s plot, and Grace, both smartly expand the scope of the show and explore just how much she’s growing apart from her family. But Jen, desperate for vengeance, and revealed as the most powerful member of the family, is the one that stays with you. Her attempt to imitate Anissas’s vigilante style is both a nice callback and an indicator of just how different they are. Plus the sisters get some genuine and sweet moments together.
Verdict: Rounded out with some fun, and violent, Tobias stuff this is another stand out episode in the most heavily serialised, and frequently most successful, show in the Berlantiverse. Complex, confident and essential. 9/10
