Anissa discovers the ASA are keeping the disappeared children in cryogenic suspension. Jennifer discovers the true nature of her powers. Gambi is brought in by the ASA.
Again, the sheer amount of attention the show pays to tying everything in it together pays off here. First off, there’s the way that Gambi, Jefferson’s origin and the ASA are all tied together. Then, there’s the way that it takes the arrival of Anissa, a literal new perspective, to move things along. Most tellingly, there’s the show’s willingness to take this fundamental neatness and kick it over and see what happens,
There are two moments like that this episode. The first is when Jefferson is brought in, as a civilian victim, to try to persuade Gambi to talk. You can see the look on both men’s faces as they realise this is where the charade ends. Either Jefferson does nothing and Gambi dies, or Jefferson takes down the agents and is outed. He makes the only choice he can and that in turn opens the next door in the series’ plot; Gambi’s entirely sensible revelation that he must have a replacement. That someone else in the community is out there spotting the kids with powers.
And that leads to the reveal on Vice-Principal Fowdy. Which makes perfect sense, folds the last outlier character in, and changes and deepens the tone of every school scene.
All this in 45 minutes. Plus some genuinely very funny moments (the entire ‘electric vision’ conversation for one) and some solid action. That means Episode 10 isn’t just another impressive entry, but it drives the show on into its endgame.
Verdict: Yet more impressive work from the freshman series. 9/10
