Acorn Media International
A neurosurgeon discovers she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches and must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations.
Hot on the heels of their adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, AMC continues its foray into Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe with an eight-part series based on the Lives of the Mayfair Witches Trilogy – The Witching Hour (1990), Lasher (1993) and Taltos (1994).
The series follows neurosurgeon Rowan Fielding (Alexandra Daddario) who discovers that she can rupture people’s brains with her thoughts, which is useful when facing off against immortal enemy Lasher (Jack Huston). Clash of the Titans’ Harry Hamlin is on hand as Cortland Mayfair, but it’s all a bit soapy and Twilight-lite, and lacks the bite of Interview with the Vampire. We’re always multiple steps ahead of Fielding and no cliche or trope is left unticked in this glossy and (unforgivably) dull nonsense.
Verdict: Anne Rice deserves better than this uninspired and boring saga. 3/10
