Louis delves further into his interview, chronicling his ambitious escape with Claudia after their calculated murder of Lestat, leading them to post-war Paris.

AMC tackles the second half of Anne Rice’s 1976 gothic drama with this eight-part season, maintaining the quality established in its first season.

Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) and Claudia (now played by Delainey Hayles) are on the run, having killed Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). Along the way, they meet variations of the vampire kind, until eventually settling in with a group of the undead in a Parisian theatre.

A direct follow-on to Season 1, the sophomore year plays on the strengths of the opening episodes – namely excellent characterisation by the leads and sumptuous production design. Never is this more apparent than in the vampire theatre, where Ben Daniels is remarkable as mesmerising leader Santiago.

It’s a bloody series, and there are times when you wonder if the material has been stretched a little thinly, but with so much quality on display, who is arguing? Each episode has a brief behind-the-scenes featurette to take you deeper into the world.

Verdict. Another excellent season, with all eyes now on next year’s adaptation of The Vampire Lestat. 9/10
