Your hear that loud screeching noise? That’s the sound of this show applying its brakes, when really it needs to get moving. I expressed a concern last week that the show was becoming distracted by some of the side missions and quests of some of the supporting characters and sadly this hour feels like the whole thing is a bunch of none-too-interesting asides that are taking us nowhere.
Mad Sweeney and Laura’s road trip provides them with the opportunity to experience a sexual release with others, but it’s a very convoluted way to essentially reach the point of realisation that they really have the hots for another – well, duh! Shadow gets embroiled in a flashback story of lynching in old Cairo, and even Bilquis gets some of the limelight to find a way to gather more followers, but just none of this has any great drive. Yetide Badaki is great as the sensual goddess, but really has been given so little to play with – consider her introduction in the first episode where she literally devours someone and then look at the lost soul that she is now.
Verdict: We’ve hit the halfway point in the season, but apart from the introduction of the House on the Rock and Sam Black Crow, what really has happened to define this run? This show needs to re-find its focus, pronto. 6/10
