As he is tracked by Mr World, Shadow makes his way to Cairo, thanks to a ride from Sam Black Crow. Mr Wednesday slyly gains Laura’s help in forging an alliance with a powerful god, while Mr World introduces Technical Boy to New Media and assigns them a very important task.
After the high drama and excitement of episode two, things slow down a little as people pick up the pieces following the train crash caused by Wednesday. In Laura’s case she’s literally in pieces and requires stitching up, while Shadow can’t be found and is following the directions if a raven. Of great interest to fans of the book is the introduction of Sam Black Crow (Devery Jacobs), a travelling companion for Shadow who will prove to be very important in latter episodes, and she doesn’t disappoint.
Elsewhere, characters pair up to perform side missions and tasks – Wednesday and Laura bicker endlessly as they search for god Argus, a target also being sought by Technology Boy and new god New Media. The latter is played by Kahyun Kim, a replacement of sorts for Gillian Anderson’s departed Media, and she’s all emojis, Instagrams posts and Snapchat filters. Oh, and Salim and Jinn go to a strip club to pick up a weapon.
Fans of the book will recognise that this instalment covers off Chapter 7, ending in Cairo where Shadow reaches Ibis and Jaquel’s funeral parlour, although a lot of the ancillary activity has been created for this show to give the supporting characters something to do.
Verdict: With some foreshadowing of the upcoming car on the frozen lake, it’s good to see the show back on the right narrative track again, with the main focus (rightly) being on Shadow’s journey. Let’s hope it stays this way. 7/10
