A young boy and his grandfather are transformed by the arrival of a mysterious ring, ordered from a comic book 60 years ago.

This is more like it. Amazing Stories finally finds its mojo with this delightful tale of wish-fulfilment that actually has an Amblin feel to it and genuinely earns Spielberg’s name. Of course, the biggest plus here is the involvement of Robert Forster (The Black Hole) in this his final role, and the episode is dedicated to him.

Forster is grandpa Joe, recovering from surgery at his son’s house. He’s mean to everyone, barking at the world because he’s too old to be employable and because life never gave him what he wanted. Then a magic ring that he ordered as a child from a comic book arrived in the mail and it becomes the thing that changes him and bonds him to his grandson.

The ring gives him super powers like enhanced strength and the power of flight, leading to a tense moment on the roof of the high school where all three generations have to fight to save one another. It’s corny, but it’s the perfect way to remember Forster.

Verdict: Three episodes in and finally Amazing Stories taps in to the amazing. It’s all about the performances – and they are spot on here. Delightful. 9/10
