Brains gets the chance of a lifetime – to visit the lost city of Atlantis…
There’s some very effective model work in this episode of Thunderbirds are Go as the team recreate a Grecian feel for the lost city – apart from its Solar Kythera, which seems to be the work of a Steampunk enthusiast let loose. Brains and Francois Lemaire’s trip around the kythera is the highpoint of the episode, with a nice sense of scale – you get the feel that you sometimes got in the original series when real life objects were placed next to the puppets. I was a little surprised, though, that none of the answers to the clues were Phi-Alpha-Beta – FAB in Greek… There are also some well-done underwater sequences with both TB4 and FAB 1.
The music is also one of the strongest parts of this instalment – Ben and Nick Foster have fun with the textures, providing an appropriately epic feel to the Atlantean scenes. I didn’t spot any specific shout-outs to the BBC Atlantis score but coincidentally or not, the cues had much the same quality as the first season of that.
After Ned Tetford’s return last episode, we get another reprise of guest star, and while Francois and his long suffering wife are always fun, I hope we’ll get more “ordinary” members of the public caught up in the rescues in the rest of the season.
Verdict: Another enjoyable outing for the Tracys. 7/10
