The long-anticipated return of TV’s most grotesque town comes to a head as the storylines established in the opening two instalments resolve themselves. Wisely focusing on a few characters rather than trying to squeeze in all of the locals, the threads converge, some meet their maker, and others are left with a positive sense of hope.
If the opening instalments were pervaded by a sense of melancholy, there’s an optimism at the end that suggests life can go on. While at least two popular characters are killed off, two others face the future with a sense of hope. One wonders where the recently announced stage show for autumn 2018 will take the team – surely it’s not all plain sailing ahead? One character in particular is left in limbo, crying out to be rescued.
There was a risk that the League of Gentlemen had outlived their relevance, returning purely to fulfil a nostalgia rush. But this isn’t the case – the creative team have not been resting while the show has been off the air and they bring their modern storytelling sensibilities to their beloved show.
Verdict: You can’t go back… but you can visit. And what a welcome trip it is. 9/10
