The mysterious Red Rose smartphone app continues to play sinister games with Rochelle and her friends.

Sometimes a broadcaster will release two or more episodes for preview. I was disappointed when I only had access to the Red Rose season opener for my first review, but having greedily watched the second ep now, I completely understand why the BBC held it back.

My esteemed editor suggested that a spoiler or two might be acceptable, but, respectfully, I shall eschew his advice and strongly suggest that anyone diving into the world of Red Rose steers clear of anything that might betray the major, and genuinely surprising plot turn that occurs herein.

This is a hugely entertaining, intelligent show encapsulating the depth and truthfulness of the original Skins series – but with added scary bits – full of well-rounded characters, even in the minor roles, and an engrossing story that is underpinned by serious questions, the main one here asking why the smartphone generation are more likely to trust their tech than their friends.

Of course, the other, more superficial question is whether the eponymous app is actually supernatural or engineered by one of our characters with malign intent. I guess I’ll have to watch the next six episodes to find out.

Verdict: Red Rose continues to be excellent in every respect. 9/10
