Willy Wondo has created the ultimate illusion and Neville Griffin needs to know the secret, whatever the cost.
Another week and another new genre is entertained by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith in their anthology show, this being a very satisfying and tricksy tale. Like one of the Tales of the Unexpected or a segment in an Amicus portmanteau anthology film, it’s a beautifully contrived half hour.
Having killed Steve Pemberton’s Willy Wondo in the opening minutes, Reece Shearsmith’s Neville Griffin spends the next nine years achieving great success and winning awards, agreeing to be interviewed by a young illusionist. The trick that the youngster tries out on him seems an easy one to crack, but there’s far more going on beneath the surface, and to the viewer’s delight.
Verdict: Sharp, witty and using misdirection to keep you off the scent, the duo of magicians have plenty up their sleeves to delight. 9/10
