Aziraphale and Crowley are drawn together again when the former receives an unexpected visitor at his bookshop
The adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s comedy fantasy novel returns for a second season following 2019’s first six-part story. This is an entirely new tale using the authors’ characters in an original story, and in the nicest possible way it’s like putting on a comfortable pair of slippers.
David Tennant and Michael Sheen are so at home in their personas, showing a sparkling energy between themselves whenever they’re both on screen. It’s a joy to have these characters back, and while the silly old cliche ‘I’d watch them reading a shopping list’ applies, thankfully they get to deliver dialogue by Neil Gaiman and John Finnemore.
Something is going down in the up (Heaven) and Hell’s envoy Shax (a delightful Miranda Richardson) wants to know what intel Crowley (Tennant) can share. Meanwhile, Fell (Sheen) is living a quiet life running his bookshop and generally being a lovely person, but the calm is shattered by a naked man turning up on his doorstep.
Verdict: Witty, sharp, and populated by a great cast of genre favourites, this promises to be fun all the way. 8/10
