he crew encounter a foe they thought was far behind them…
Much more of an ensemble episode than the second in this set, Mark Wright’s Resurgence plays to the strengths of both the characters and the cast, with multiple situations that would play out very differently if this was any other series than Blake’s 7 – and indeed if there were other crew members still aboard the Liberator. Alastair Lock’s Zen and Orac both get far more to do than normal, and, certainly in the case of the latter, demonstrate qualities that you might not expect while Abi Harris’ Alta-Six makes a good personification of an old enemy.
I hope that some of the elements introduced in this (not least the mysterious contents of the alien base) play into the rest of the season. The interplay between the characters works – Yasmin Bannerman’s Dayna getting some fleshing out, and some intriguing self-knowledge that should make a reappearance down the line. There’s even a perhaps surprising admission from Avon regarding Blake!
Verdict: Another strong script from Wright that works both as a character piece and as an action adventure. 9/10
