The weapon Avon finds on Solus station really isn’t one that he wants after all…
The box set finishes with another ensemble piece, giving a couple of the actors a chance to tap into different sides to their characters as the Liberator itself comes under threat. George Mann’s story has plenty of clever twists, including some unusual moments for Jacqueline Pearce’s Servalan, and is best listened to completely unspoiled.
Given the number of small cast stories that we’ve had from Blake’s 7, it always seems a bit of a waste to only utilise a couple of castmembers in full cast audio sets, and this story gives everyone plenty to do – Yasmin Bannerman’s Dayna has a face off with Servalan that’s been coming for a long time, and Michael Keating’s Vila is a hero!
The set is accompanied by a full CD of extras, which chronicle some of the difficulties and challenges faced by the new Big Finish production team, and the changes which have had to take place. There’s some strong hints about the content of the upcoming new season of stories, taking place between the penultimate episode of Season C and the finale – and if this slightly harder edge is maintained throughout, they’ll be as enjoyable as this set has overall been.
Verdict: A strong conclusion to the Liberator’s crew’s return. 8/10
