A young couple travel to a sleepy Scottish town to start work on a genteel nature documentary – but find themselves drawn to a juicy local story involving shocking events of the past.
In a huge tonal shift from the light-hearted frolics of Joan is Awful, Loch Henry plunges us into a horror film, with an ending that justifies the Black Mirror badging.
Davis (Samuel Blenkin) and Pia (Myha’la Herrold, Industry) return to his Scottish home to make a benign film about a local egg collector. What’s far more intriguing is the true crime story they uncover of a local monster who indirectly killed Davis’ father. Recognising that Streamberry (Black Mirror’s thinly veiled version of Netflix) loves a true crime documentary, the young filmmakers dig deeper, against the advice of locals.
Up to a certain point, there is nothing new in Charlie Brooker’s horror story, with just enough of a twist in the tail to possibly surprise you. Until then, it’s horror trope after horror trope, with a fine supporting cast led by Monica Dolan, John Hannah and Daniel Portman.
Verdict: The supporting performances are much stronger than the familiar story deserves, and there’s still enough of a spark to keep up the interest levels. 6/10
