Multiple heroes fight to save the multiverse…

Middle parts of trilogies always have certain issues to overcome – they’re not setting up the problem to be solved, nor are they providing final resolution. They need to have a justification for their own existence and provide the reader / viewer with a satisfying tale.

This unfortunately fails to do that. We get to learn more about Psycho Pirate and Supergirl, but a lot of the material about the other heroes feels a little by the book and rote, and the fight sequences a bit lacklustre. That’s not to say that the voice cast don’t give it their all, but given that this is the entirety of existence that’s at stake, it feels a little small (and not focusing on a single character as part 1 does contributes to that). The recent Star Trek trilogy of novels that wrapped up the literary universe, or indeed the original comic book version of Crisis, reminded us of the scope, as did the CW’s (very different) take on this core concept.

Verdict: It’s not a bad film, and passes an entertaining 90 minutes or so, but it’s by no means the best of these animated movies. 5/10
