Fabulous Films, out now
In a future where Earth is covered with water, the human race struggles to survive in dilapidated boats and makeshift floating cities called atolls.
If Arrow’s three-disc Blu-Ray is a bit too much for you, and you just want to watch a regular DVD of Kevin Reynolds’ 1995 box office torpedo, Fabulous Films’ release is a no-nonsense release that lets you decide whether the movie is as bad as you thought.
Unfortunately, the most interesting aspect of the movie is the behind-the-scenes story that saw budgets escalate, actor and director coming to blows, sets sinking and more. And because this vanilla release doesn’t go in to that detail – you only get the trailer – all you have is the final film, which now lives and dies purely on its own merits.
Kevin Costner is the unlikely gill-sporting Mariner, Dennis Hopper chews up the rigging as pantomime hero Deacon and the whole thing goes on about half an hour too long.
Verdict: Overblown, noisy and unnecessary – the worst excesses of 90s blockbuster star vehicles. But at least it doesn’t look cheap, and it spawned a great stunt show at Universal Studios. 6/10
