Lionsgate Home Entertainment, out now

When four glowing orbs crash into each other over the Arizona desert, they leave in their wake a badass Dodge Turbo Interceptor – and its enigmatic, helmeted driver.

What a bizarre 1986 relic The Wraith is, released as part of the Vestron Video Collector’s Series. It’s essentially a western revenge movie, as a mysterious stranger (Charlie Sheen) breezes into town, falls for the local gangster’s moll (a pre-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn) and then begins to whittle down the bad guys’ gang by running them off the road in his high-tech car, while wearing a spacesuit.

It’s as bonkers as that sounds, with the henchmen all played as dumb punks, Nick Cassavetes chewing the scenery as the big bad Packard and Randy Quaid as the sheriff who really has no idea what he’s up against. From the pop song-fuelled soundtrack to the extreme fashions and glossy veneer, it’s an 80s time capsule, and if you can handle the excesses of the decade that taste forgot, you’ll have fun with the exciting action scenes.

The disc features audio commentaries with writer/director Mike and actors Dave Sherrill and Jamie Bozian. There’s also isolated score selections featuring an audio interview with co-composer J. Peter Robinson and a while bunch of other interviews with behind-the-scenes talent, as well as the obligatory trailer and TV spots.

Verdict: Undemanding 80s cheese that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. 7/10
