Signature Entertainment, out now
A female WWII pilot traveling with top secret documents on a B-17 Flying Fortress encounters an evil presence on board the flight.
When the blurb on the packaging proudly states that a movie is from the Executive Producer of Hobbs and Shaw, a red flag should be raised. And to be fair, that flag is on the money for this bizarre, low-budget World War II nonsense that’s a wannabe mix of The Twilight Zone’s Nightmare at 20,000 Feet and Wonder Woman, though failing to embrace the best aspects of either.
While I’d normally steer clear of the phrase Mary Sue (a female character where the author inserts themself into the narrative with unfeasible strengths) in view of its frequent misogynistic use, I can’t think of a better way to describe Chloe Grace Moritz’s Maude Garrett, writer/director Roseanne Liang’s super strong pilot/spy/mother/saviour fighting not only sexism and Nazis but a toothsome gremlin that’s determined to bring down her plane. The explosive plot twists drop with no subtlety and credibility, and the whole sorry mess limps to its predictable end.
Verdict: Cliched, cheesy nonsense that fails to deliver the fantasy thrills and is likely to leave you with your head in your hands for most of its mercifully brief running time.
2/10
