Sony, out now on digital download and Bluray/DVD on 21 October

There’s a new team saving the Earth… but are they up to the job?

Feeling rather like the sequel that nobody actually asked for (although not up there with the likes of War Games 2 or Children of the Corn 3008), this latest outing for the smart dressing outfit was apparently plagued with problems during production, leading to occasions where the stars – Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson – were writing their own versions of the scenes. A lot of the contemporary reviews focused on this, looking for uneven areas.

Seeing it fresh, its convoluted history isn’t as noticeable as you may have been led to expect. It’s the sort of movie that does what it says on the tin – it’s an enjoyable action comedy, with good chemistry between the two leads (as they’d already demonstrated in Thor Ragnarok), some fun sight gags, a bit of over the top acting (okay, to be fair, quite a bit of over the top acting – hello Rebecca Fergusson), and some effects that definitely hold up on an HD television. Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson are the bosses while Rafe Spall is very effective as another London-based agent who really doesn’t like Hemsworth’s H.

The extras are short and sweet – as ever, a gag reel featuring Hemsworth is worth a look – but they don’t really give more than a brief flavour of the movie’s production.

Verdict: The sort of film to watch when it’s howling a gale outside and you just want something that’s not taxing but fun. 7/10
