In a post-apocalyptic society where food is scarce and used as currency, an unusual delicatessen serves delicacies.

Writer/directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s delicious 1981 black comedy gets a 4K makeover.

This new 4K restoration of the original camera negative was overseen by director Jeunet, digitally replicating the original photochemical process applied by DoP Darius Khondji to the original interpositive, delivering a picture that veers towards the yellow, accentuated by the HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The French-language soundtrack is in 5.1 DTS-HD MA, aided by English subtitles.

Dominique Pinion steals the show as the eccentric clown Louison, living in a beautifully designed world that’s equal parts Gilliam and Burton, veering between comedic and cannibalistic.

While the audio commentary with Jeunet is not new, there’s an impressive 65-minute retrospective with cast and crew and a 25-minute interview with the directors.

Verdict: This beautiful Gallic classic has never looked so yellow, but when the content is this tasty, you just tuck on in. 8/10
