In the small town of Beaverfield, a snowstorm has trapped a group of residents inside a local inn, at the mercy of a mysterious and dangerous creature.
Josh Ruben’s (Scare Me) whodunnit horror comedy is a silly, fun adaptation of the 2016 VR video game that will keep you guessing to the end. Unlike the game, which is set in a fantasy medieval town, the movie is set in the modern day, but the task is the same – to identify who the werewolf is.
The idea of a werewolf whodunnit has of course been done before – The Beast Must Die being the most memorable – and while we don’t get a ‘werewolf break’ here for us to decide who the lycanthrope is, it’s no less enjoyable. Forest Ranger Fin (Sam Richardson, Veep) and postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub, Marvel Rising) make a great team of unlikely detectives, trying to sniff out the beast within their ranks. As expected, everyone has their motives and all suspects are larger than life.
Is any of it believable, and could you genuinely be expected to work things out yourself? Not really. But the bickering and antagonism between the characters is so bitchy that it really doesn’t matter, and there’s great comic turns by the likes of Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) and Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows).
Verdict: Agatha Christie with added fur and claws – what’s not to enjoy? 7/10
