Jinga Films, out now
Two gas station attendants unwittingly become the stars of a terrifying show streamed live on the dark web. Held captive by a sadistic ringmaster, their survival instincts are stretched to the limit as an unseen audience decide their fate.
Søren Juul Petersen’s gruelling Danish-language torture porn movie is a tough watch, and comes 15 years after the peak of the Hostel/Saw craze. Unfortunately, it has nothing new to say in this horror sub-genre and makes for a very unpleasant 100 minutes, unless you like seeing people get blowtorched, stapled or have badge pins inserted into their nipples.
Based on Finale, the award-winning novel by Steen Langstrup, we join Agnes (Anne Bergfeld) and Anna (Karin Michelsen) working the night shift in a remote gas station while the rest of the country are sat at home watching an important football match (it is at least timely in this respect). They’re visited by increasingly strange customers, and this is by far the most compelling section of the film. When it switches to the studio where the girls and Agnes’ boyfriend are tortured online, it just becomes grotesque, and regardless of the ending, the gross factor is too much.
Verdict: I’d struggle to recommend this nasty film to anyone. It doesn’t even boast originality or clever twists to justify its sadism. To be avoided. 2/10
